Events

Museum members receive discounts on special events and receive the biannual events calendar (see Join Us). Our events calendar runs from September to June, and features concerts, lectures, and other programs. Doors will open 30 minutes prior to the beginning of all concerts and lectures.

As a token of our appreciation for our patrons, this season everyone who attends a performance from our concert series will receive a coupon at the door worth the price of admission for one to a Saturday Highlights Tour.


Hinduism in Pennsylvania Exhibit
Saturday, January 26 though Saturday, May 31, 2008

Adapted from Indiana University of Pennsylvania's "Eastern Religions Come to Western Pennsylvania," this exhibit focuses on Hindu practices. Pennsylvania has welcomed religious diversity ever since its founding under William Penn. Such pluralism did not expand beyond the Christian and Jewish communities, however, until quite recently. The objects in this exhibit illuminate Hinduism, and ancient faith still flourishing around the world today.

Hinduism in Pennsylvania: A Lecture by Dr. Stuart Chandler, Curator

Eric Ruske, French Horn

An artist and teacher of international acclaim, Eric is back with his unique sense of humor and impeccable virtuosity. His impressive solo career began when he won first prize in the 1986 Young Concert International Auditions, 1987 American Horn Competition and 1988 Concours International d'Interpretation Musicale in Reims, France.

At the conclusion of this performance the audience is invited to meet Eric and his accompanist at a reception where light refreshments will be served, and to ride up nine floors in our elevator to the tower observation deck, with its commanding view of the local area and the Philadelphia skyline!

Medieval Stained Glass/5-Day Intensive
Monday, April 14 through Friday, April 18, 2008, 10:00am to 5:00pm

J. Kenneth Leap will be returning to Glencairn to lead an exciting in-depth exploration into the techniques of medieval stained glass. Workshop participants will sketch in the galleries, view rare books, and create glass works inspired by those in the museum's extraordinary collection. Weeklong Glassblowing Demonstrations

Jason Klein of Historical Glassworks will be giving live demonstrations daily throughout the week. Ancient Roman techniques will be explored using examples from the Glencairn collection, as well as medieval techniques and Bryn Athyn-style glassblowing techniques used in the creation of the stained glass windows at Bryn Athyn Cathedral and Glencairn.

Reflections of Faith: A Stained Glass Sunday

In the 1920s Raymond Pitcairn was determined to duplicate the rich texture and pure colors of medieval glass for the Bryn Athyn Cathedral and Glencairn. Did he succeed? Judge for yourself! See Pitcairn's collection of medieval windows. Watch live demonstrations of ancient medieval and Bryn Athyn-style glassblowing techniques by Jason Klein of Historical Glassworks. Make your own stained glass piece at the Stained Glass Workshop (see below). Wander through the building or take a guided tour.

WheatonArts & Cultural Center Glass Workshop Returns to Glencairn!
Sunday, April 20, 2008, 1:00 to 5:00pm
Workshop: $10 Adults, $5 Members/Students with I.D.

Noted stained glass artist J. Kenneth Leap from the Stained Glass Center at WheatonArts (Millville, MJ) will lead a stained glass workshop, using authentic 12th century techniques. Participants will apply glass pigment to designs adapted from Glencairn's collection of medieval glass. Painted glass panels will be fired in an ultra-fast gas kiln, so you can take your creation home at the end of the day.

Bharathanatyam: Classical Hindu Dancing
Friday, April 25th, 7:30pm (Doors open at 7pm)
Admission: $8 Adults, $4 Seniors/Students with I.D., Free for Members.

Bharathanatyam is the most well-known classical dance form of India. It has a clear and established history dating back to 1500 B.C. Shoba Narayanan, who will be performing this ancient dance, is a bharathanatyam artist from Radnor, PA. She is a senior is high school, and has trained from a very early age with some of the finest bharathanatyam teachers.

Posaune Decouple (Ten Trombones)

The dectet returns having played to 312 enthused patrons in '06! Sadly, Glenn Dodson, their director, passed away recently. However, his colleagues, including trombonists from the Philadelphia Orchestra, San Francisco and Brazil, will perform as scheduled to honor Glenn's inimitable spirit (program to include world premier of new work by composer, Eric Ewazen, written for Glenn).

Seating Capacity: 300.
