Few texts in history blur the lines between earthly and spiritual as thoughtfully as the Song of Solomon. This biblical poem, sometimes read as both a celebration of romantic love and an allegory of the love between God and the Church, was set to music countless times during the Renaissance.

Solomon’s Vineyard features Leonhard Lechner’s rarely heard German language version of Song of Solomon, Das Hohelied Salomonis, composed in 1606, which has a subtle “joy of life” mirrored in the popular music and poetry of the day. Join us for a tasting of the Song of Solomon and other works inspired by the triple muse of love, life, and good wine, curated by Leonhard Lechner and his teacher, Orlande de Lassus.

Program highlights include:

Lechner - Das Hohelied Salomonis
Lassus - Tota pulchra es
Lassus - La nuit froide et sombre; O vin en vigne
Eccard - Der Musik Feind seind Ignoranten

Les Canards Chantants is a solo-voice ensemble committed to dynamic interpretation of Renaissance polyphony. Founded in York, England in 2011, since their debut the “Singing Ducks” have performed to critical acclaim in the UK, Germany, China, and across the east coast of the USA, and have gained a reputation for their daring theatricality, quirky music videos, humor, and for engaging with the most unusual repertoire from the Renaissance. Since relocating to Philadelphia in 2013, they have appeared in concert with Renaissance wind band Piffaro, baroque string ensemble ACRONYM, and released the world premiere recording of Valentini’s Secondo libro de madrigali (Second book of madrigals). Les Canards Chantants are proud to be musical Ensemble in Residence at Glencairn Museum.

Performers include:

Eric Brenner, countertenor
Robin Bier, contralto
Jacob Perry, tenor
Graham Bier, bass
