This nine-piece Nativity was designed by Hajime Miyashita for the company Kokeshi Designs. The making of Kokeshi dolls is recognized as a traditional folk art in Japan, and Miyashita is a renowned Kokeshi artist. His works have won awards, and in the late 1960s some of his dolls were purchased by Crown Prince Naruhito (now Emperor) and Princess Masako. The figures in this Nativity have peaceful, smiling faces, and their heads are slightly bowed in reverence for the Christ Child.
