In 1944, Raymond and Mildred Pitcairn commissioned Philadelphia artist Frank Snyder to design this Christmas card. The initial letter “A” of the story of the Adoration of the Shepherds (Luke 2:8-11) is inhabited by an illustration of two shepherds with their sheep visiting the baby Jesus and Mary. Snyder worked as a painter and muralist at Glencairn from 1937 to 1940, and continued working on freelance projects into the early 1950s. His work included a large Adoration of the Shepherds painting on canvas, a mural in Michael Pitcairn’s bedroom, and painted plexiglass lampshades.
