Glencairn Museum will be closing to undergo a major infrastructure project beginning May 1, 2022. Education program bookings for the 2021–2022 school year will only be available until April 30, 2022.
The following programs are Glencairn Museum’s standard educational offerings for groups. Educators choose one program from each category—“Upper-Floor Programs” and “First-Floor Programs.”
UPPER-FLOOR PROGRAMS
Medieval Life Tour (45 minutes)
Grades K–8
Immerse your students in the world of European knights, monks, peasants, and more with our popular Medieval Life tour. This program will:
Offer interpretation of the medieval world through three different lenses: those who work, those who pray, and those who fight
Highlight the religious work, beliefs, and daily practices of people in the Middle Ages
Incorporate multisensory activities with objects
Focus on continuity and change including reflective thinking opportunities
Ancient Cultures Tour (45 minutes)
Grades 4–8
Travel around the world and back in time as you and your students experience four ancient cultures reflected in Glencairn’s collections. This program will:
Explore objects of Ancient Egypt, the Ancient Near East, Ancient Greece, and Ancient Rome
Discuss similarities and differences in the worldviews, beliefs and practices of each culture including topics such as physical and human geography, continuity and change
Provide opportunities for self-reflection through discussion and multisensory activities
Sacred Adornment Program (45 minutes)
Grades 6–12
What is an adornment? Who was adorned in ancient times, and who is adorned today? What do adornments say about someone? Students will discover the answers to these questions and more in this program focused on the religious meaning of many ancient adornments. This program will:
Explore adornment of Ancient Egypt, the Ancient Near East, Ancient Greece, and Ancient Rome
Discuss the religious significance of ancient adornments
Invite students to think about the role that adornment plays in their own lives
FIRST-FLOOR PROGRAMS
Stained-Glass Program (45 minutes)
K–12
Explore one of Glencairn Museum’s most visually stunning features in this guided, interactive, stained-glass program. This program will:
Provide students with the language and knowledge to decode religious symbolism and imagery in medieval stained-glass
Encourage student-led inquiry and discovery
Offer an interdisciplinary study of fine arts and humanities by analyzing artwork from historic and cultural perspectives
Craftmanship at Glencairn Program (45 minutes or 90 minutes)
Grades 4–10
(45 minutes)
Students get to become the experts as they explore and share the lives and work of five artists who contributed their craftsmanship to create Glencairn in stone, wood, metal, and glass.
(90 minutes—additional $2 per student)
In this extended version of the program, students will put their new craftsmanship knowledge into practice by collaboratively designing the long-lost second Tower of Glencairn! This program will:
Introduce students to the lives and work of five craftsmen who worked on Glencairn
Allow students to work collaboratively with their classmates, and take on the role of presenting information and guiding the program
Move students through the process of remembering and understanding content, to applying new ideas and creating for themselves (extended version only)
