In England, wheat woven into symbols of love were an important part of rural courting customs. According to Doris Johnson and Alec Coker’s book, The Complete Book of Straw Craft and Corn Dollies (1987), “farm laborers in the British Isles used to plait little buttonhole favors with the straw and offer them to their sweethearts as love tokens. According to some traditions, the favors or harvest knots [also known as love knots] worn by girls displayed ears of grain while those for men had only the straw, a nice retention of the fertility association of the grain.”
