For their November concert at Glencairn Museum, the Quartet’s program includes pieces by Charles Tomlinson Griffes and Antonín Dvořák, and the United States’ premier of the String Quartet in C Major by Norman O’Neill (1875-1934). O’Neill, a British composer and conductor, garnered praise for his theatrical music as well as chamber pieces. Sadly, many of the latter pieces are still unpublished. However, Lloyd Smith of the Wister Quartet is working in collaboration with the Delius Society (Philadelphia Branch) to put O’Neill’s music into publishing condition.
Since its formation in 1987, the Grammy nominated Wister Quartet has earned high praise from critics and audiences alike for its superb musicianship. Memorable performances include those with guest artists Emanuel Ax, Alicia de Larrocha, Christoph Eschenbach, Wolfgang Sawallisch, and Yo-Yo Ma. Group members include Lloyd Smith, cello; Nancy Bean, violin; Davyd Booth, violin; and Pamela Fay, violin.
